Running for Charity!

Neil Young, an Aspatria Farmers member, farms 230 milk cows on the family farm at Crummock Bank, Waverton. They also grow their own cereal crops, where Stephen Hemingway has done the agronomy for over 20 years!
Neil decided to start running last year and entered the Cumbrian half marathon in October 2017, encouraged by Richard Todd his local Vet.
He was very pleased with his resulting time and then did a few 10k events to build his fitness. His ambition was to do the London Marathon this year but although he was too late to get in through the ballot he managed to get an entry via the charity “Young lives vs Cancer”.
Having never run 26.21 miles before he was very pleased not only to finish but in a very creditable time of 3 hours 38 minutes and36 seconds. This put him as the 5657th finisher out of some 40,000 runners. For his age category (25 -39) his placing was 2291th. “A great result considering I didn’t really do a lot of training” Neil said.
Importantly this great performance by Neil raised over £2000 for his charity, getting sponsorship from many friends, family & local businesses – we at Aspatria Farmers were proud to support Neil’s efforts.
Neil now has the bug and has already applied to get an entry for 2019, so we wish him all the best for next year. He intends to do the Great North Run in September, and he would also like to do some runs abroad to see the world as well. Bull running in Pamplona may be on the cards!
Neil was a keen runner in his teens when he was with the Aspatria Running Club, but this is first time he has gone back to running and he “ain’t half bad at it”!
