Aspatria Farmers Dairy Engineering- “The first Emergency Service”

For many of our dairy farmer members, having confidence in the level of service and expertise provided by their dairy engineer is crucial to the effective operation of their dairy unit.
When Aspatria Farmers was approached in 2015 to take on the MTS business at Longtown we saw the ideal opportunity to bring into Aspatria Farmers a business with a track record of providing farmers with great service. The MTS business, run by Tim Summerfield and Mick Kirk had grown out of the demise of Hadrian Farm Supplies and with the support of Dairymaster and a range of other suppliers had created a team servicing farmers across our whole trading area.
Our Directors recognised how important it is for our members to have access to a farmer owned dairy engineering service and that has been bourne out by the fast growth in the number of members using the dairy engineering business. Equally MTS had a lot of customers who now had access to the services and products that Aspatria Farmers can supply and many have subsequently become members and committed other supplies to our business.
In December 2016 we also took on the responsibility for servicing and selling conventional parlours and upgrades for Fullwood, when their local distributor McCaskies wound down their engineering operation in Carlisle. This broadened our product range and customer base, but as importantly enabled us to recruit several new dairy engineers who previously worked for McCaskies which helped strengthen our team and brought new expertise to the business.
Today, we are very proud of the skills and resources we have to provide farmers with engineering solutions across their dairy, slurry renewables and general machinery needs. As a farmer owned business you can be assured that we will offer you unbiased advice that always puts your interests first.
When we took on MTS we also identified the importance of working hard to keep calibre dairy engineers in agriculture, because their skills are very transferable into other industries and once lost to agriculture they may not be replaced. On this same theme we are committed, on your behalf, to growing the next generation of engineers to work in agriculture and we currently have three apprentice engineers who will be here in the future looking after the next generation on your farm!
Many farmers think that running a dairy engineering business is all about selling new plant. Although it is important, the majority of our work comes from breakdowns, repairs and upgrades on existing equipment and that is where the on farm expertise of our teams comes into its own.
As with all of our business, our success in this area is measured by our effectiveness in providing our members with a great service that helps them run a successful dairy farm!
In this newsletter we have tried to give you a greater insight into what and who makes our dairy engineering business work and if you think we can help, don’t hesitate to give our team a call and they will be happy to help!
